I. poz. zmožen, môčen, močán, mogočen, silen, oblasten: Divi potes Varr.; večinoma v povezavi z glag. esse ali tudi brez njega = biti sposoben, biti zmožen, (z)moči, premoči, mogoče biti komu kaj: potis sum hoc inter vos componere Pl., at non Euandrum potis est vis ulla tenere V., potis es reperire Lucr., sanguis potis est consistere Poeta ap. Ci., nec (naspr. corpus) potis est cerni Lucr., si potis est Ter., Prud. če je mogoče, če je moč, quid pastores potis sunt Varr., nec potis (sc. est) Ionios fluctus aequare sequendo V., quī potis est? Cat. kako je mogoče?; v vprašanju: potin = potisne: potin' es dicere? Ter., potin' est (= potest)? Pl., potin' (= potin' est), ut desinas? Ter. ali moreš nehati? ali lahko nehaš? = nehaj vendar?; neutr. pote z istim pomenom: Lucr., hoc facias sive id non pote sive pote (sc. est) Cat., quā pote quisque, in eā conterat arte diem Pr.; pote (pote') = potest; z inf.: Vitr., Pr., pa tudi = potest esse more biti, mogoče je: nihil pote supra Ter., hoc quidquam pote impurius? Ci., quantum pote Ci. ep. kolikor (= kakor hitro, takoj ko, brž ko) je mogoče; potis ali pote (sc. esse) = posse često pri Pl. — Iz potis (pote) in esse je nastal glag. possum (gl. possum; prim. tudi še pte in zvezo ut-pote). —

II. komp. potior -ius

1. prednost imajoč, ljubši, važnejši, boljši, vrlejši, odličnejši, izvrstnejši: abs.: heres L., sententia V., H., ut sit potior Ter. da bo imel prednost; tako tudi: qui potior nunc es Tib., Persae multitudine potiores Cu. močnejši; potiorem vitā rem habere C. ali publica commoda privatis potiora habere C. javnim (državnim) koristim dajati prednost pred zasebnimi, plus pollet potiorque est patre Poeta ap. Ci., cives potiores quam peregrini Ci., nihil mihi potius fuit, quam ut … Ci.; subst. n pl. važnejše (pomembnejše, izvrstnejše, boljše) stvari (reči), važnejše (pomembnejše, izvrstnejše, boljše): ea referremus, nisi maiora potioraque haberemus N., quasi potiora quaedam egisset Cu., naturae est potioribus deteriora submittere Sen. ph.

2. vrednejši: quibus tantum crederem, potiores habui L. (sklad po adj. dignus). — Od tod acc. sg. adv. potius bolj, raje, rajši, prej(e): quaestio facti potius est, non iuris Icti., Galliam potius esse Ariovisti quam populi Romani est C., hic potius vivus in reos quam occisus in proscriptos referretur Ci.; s finalnim stavkom: perpessus est omnia potius quam conscios indicaret Ci. kakor da bi bil … , audeo dicere hoc malo domitos ipsos potius cultores agrorum fore quam ut armati per secessionem coli prohibeant L.; quam potius V. = potius quam. Pogosto (v zvezi z vel, sive, seu, aut) kot popravek (correctio), pojasnilo prejšnjega izraza = bolje (rečeno), to je, oziroma: magnus (sc. homo) vel potius summus Ci., o clementiam populi Romani seu potius patientiam miram Ci., sceleratus civis aut domesticus potius hostis Ci.; pri nasprotjih (v zvezi z ne, atqui, sed): istius fide ne potius perfidiā decepti Ci., non laudatio, sed (marveč, temveč) inrisio Ci.; pri komp.: cum ei fuerit optabilius oblivisci posse potius … Ci.; pri glag. s komparativnim pomenom (malle, praestare, praeoptare; v teh primerih se potius ne sloveni): N., Uticae potius quam Romae esse maluisset Ci., mori potius quam servire praestaret Ci., ut puerum praeoptares perire potius quam … Ter. —
